Vision impairment affects 2.2 billion people globally, with 1 billion cases preventable. India has 62 million affected, primarily due to cataracts and refractive errors. Surgery Restores Sight in Rare Eye Condition

In Pune, Surgons have successfully restored vision in a patient suffering from a rare condition called coloboma through a complex quintuple eye surgery. The 28-year-old patient had multiple eye issues, including cataracts and retinal detachment. The intricate procedure involved five surgeries to address these problems and ultimately improved the patient's eyesight significantly

Corneal Blindness is Rising in Karnataka

Corneal blindness represents 15% to 20% of blindness cases in Karnataka, according to Dr. Sanjana Vatsa of Dr. Agarwals Eye Hospital. The main causes have shifted from infections to eye trauma, particularly in rural areas with limited access to care. India sees 20,000 to 25,000 new cases annually, contributing to 7.5% of total blindness.

NPCBVI: Vision for a Brighter Future

The National Programme for Control of Blindness and Visual Impairment (NPCBVI) places a strong emphasis on combating cataract-related blindness, especially among senior citizens. Through free cataract surgeries, post-surgery care, and mobile eye care units that reach remote areas, the program has drastically expanded eye care services. In the fiscal year 2022-2023 alone, over 8.3 million cataract surgeries were performed, surpassing the set target. The program has successfully reduced blindness prevalence from 1.1% in 2001-02 to 0.36% by 2020.
